Our Mission
The Social Entrepreneurship Challenge aims to: |
• |
Enhance awareness of Social Entrepreneurship as a imperative alternative to fund-raising
and S.E.’s increasingly important role in ensuring sustainability of the charitable
sector;
• |
Encourage start-ups and youths’ involvement in the establishment of Social
Enterprises.
• |
Provide aspiring youths an opportunity to learn and grasp the basics of establishing
the foundations of a business/start-up and while effectually contributing to society
at large.
• |
To diminish the stereotype that the nature of profit-driven businesses and social
ideals clash. |

Background Information |
In this challenge, teams will be provided with training to draft their executive
summaries and business plans. They will also attend seminars conducted by locally
renowned Social Entrepreneurs. The best minds in our local ITEs, Polytechnics, Junior
Colleges and Universities will devise innovative and profitable ideas to be presented
to our panel of distinguished judges from Central Singapore Community Development
Council (CSCDC), the Ministry of Community Development Youth and Sports (MCYS) and
Social Innovation Park (SIP). Teams will work closely alongside VWOs to ensure that
their business plans are tailored according to the current needs and resources of
the VWOs. That is only the beginning…
Teams will then have the opportunity to implement their plans with the guidance
of mentors from various social enterprises. Teams will go on to adopt a beneficiary
and compete against each other in establishing a social enterprise that will confer
their beneficiary with a degree of financial independence, in a way that is true
to the beneficiaries’ missions and objectives.

Structure of Competition |
The Challenge organized in the following 6 major phases |
• |
Phase One: Open round of application by participants - Participants
will provide basic information about team members as well as a short paragraph on
their area of interest (I.e. Disadvantaged children, disabled etc).
• |
Phase Two: The 40 short-listed teams (20 teams from each category)
will attend a one day executive summary workshop to learn how to draft an executive
summary. Participants who are unable to attend the executive summary workshop will
still be eligible for the competition.
• |
Phase Three: After the executive summary submission, 20 short-listed
teams (10 teams from each category) will generate a business plan based on a given
template (downloaded from the MISE website) with the VWO of their choice. Teams
have to choose a VWO within the Central Singapore District (the comprehensive list
of VWOs can be found on the Resources Page) and their choices should be aligned
to the broad category of interest they have specified earlier. A two-day business
plan development workshop will also be organized for the participants to assist
them in writing the business plan.
• |
Phase Four: 6 teams will be selected from the 20 short-listed teams
at an evaluation session by the judging panel from the Social Enterprise Committee.
There will be a Final Day Event where guest speakers will be invited to share their
thoughts and the 6 teams will present their business plans to the judges from MCYS
and SIP. The Mayor of Central Singapore CDC will be invited to attend as the
Guest of Honour.
• |
Phase Five: These 6 final teams will be strongly encouraged to
implement their business plans. They will be assigned mentors from the Social Innovation
Park to guide them during this phase.
• |
Phase Six: These 6 teams will then present their business development
and financial reports to the judging panel again, in order to determine the success
of the social enterprise. A final prize giving ceremony will be held.
